Insectes isoptères vivant généralement dans les régions intertropicales où ils remplissent un rôle d'une grande importance pédologique, en participant à la fragmentation, à la décomposition, voire à la minéralisation des matières organiques, en intervenant ainsi directement sur la porosité et en assurant des remaniements plus ou moins profonds du sol.
